Stronsay lies to the North-east of Shapinsay and has daily ferry and air links to Kirkwall. The main centre of population at Whitehall village expanded greatly during the herring fishery of the 19th and early 20th century and the island’s heritage centre records this period of history vividly.
Today Stronsay is a prosperous agricultural community well served by a community junior high school with swimming pool, a medical practice, hotel and island shops.
